Corie (Jane Fonda), a free spirited young woman, and Paul Bratter (Robert Redford), a more conservative, less free-spirited man, are a recently married couple, who move into a fifth floor apartment in Greenwich Village (one of the ongoing jokes is the fact that everyone has to climb so many stairs to get to the apartment). Corie decorates the small, leaky apartment, turning it into a picturesque little home for the two. One of the many odd people living in the apartment building, the quirky Victor Velasco (Charles Boyer), befriends Corie, often even flirting with her. He lives in the attic of the building, once even climbing through the Bratters' apartment window to get to his. Victor helps Corie with the apartment, teaching her how to work the seemingly broken heating and plumbing.

CBS cameraman Harry Hinkle (Jack Lemmon) gets injured when football player Luther "Boom Boom" Jackson (Ron Rich) runs into him while he is covering a Browns game at Cleveland Stadium. Harry's injuries are minor, but his conniving lawyer brother-in-law William H. "Whiplash Willie" Gingrich (Walter Matthau) convinces him to pretend that his leg and hand have been partially paralyzed. This way, they can receive a huge indemnity from the insurance company. Harry reluctantly goes along with the scheme because he is still in love with his ex-wife, Sandy (Judi West), and it might win her back. The insurance company suspects that the paralysis is a fake one, so a cat-and-mouse game starts between its investigator, Chester Purkey (Cliff Osmond), and the shyster Willie. Boom Boom takes very good care of Harry, who starts having second thoughts as he witnesses guilt taking its toll on Boom Boom. As he also sees that Sandy is back by his side strictly out of greed, Harry decides to reveal the truth, thereby ruining Willie's get-rich plans.

While driving his Dual-Ghia from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, lecherous, heavy-drinking pop singer Dino (Dean Martin) is forced to detour through Climax, Nevada. There he meets the amateur songwriting team of Barney Millsap (Cliff Osmond), a gas station attendant, and piano teacher Orville J. Spooner (Ray Walston), a man easily given to jealousy. Hoping to interest Dino in their songs, Barney disables the "Italian" sports car and tells Dino he will need to remain in town until new parts arrive from Milan. « Monsieur Cognac », tel est le nom d'un caniche blanc devenu à Paris, au début des années 1960, une star de la télévision et de la publicité. Tout choyé qu’il est, il aime bien échapper un moment à sa maîtresse, la jeune Giselle Ponchon, en passant par un trou de la cave de la maison Ponchon. Il se promène alors la nuit sans souci dans les rues de la capitale. Dans une discothèque où se produit l'Américain Terry Williams avec sa bande, « Monsieur Cognac » déguste avec plaisir une petite tasse de la boisson alcoolisée qui porte son nom et qui était en fait réservée à l'un des musiciens. Mais ce qui a attiré notre caniche dans la discothèque, ce n’est pas le cognac mais surtout les jolies dames caniches qui font partie du spectacle. Entre Monsieur Cognac et Terry nait une telle amitié que tous les deux se lancent dans une longue tournée de cafés, au cours de laquelle le chien, rendu de couleur verdâtre à la suite d’un accident, se révèle comme un connaisseur confirmé ès boissons alcoolisées. Mais Terry va bientôt faire connaissance de Giselle, la propriétaire de Monsieur Cognac : le lendemain matin, en compagnie de son père et de la police, elle fait irruption dans l'appartement de Terry et veut faire arrêter ce dernier pour « dognapping ».

Irma la Douce ["Irma the Sweet"] tells the story of Nestor Patou (Jack Lemmon), an honest cop, who after being transferred from the park Bois de Boulogne to a more urban neighborhood in Paris, finds a street full of prostitutes working at the Hotel Casanova and proceeds to raid the place. The police inspector, who is Nestor's superior, and the other policemen, have been aware of the prostitution, but tolerate it in exchange for bribes. Jean Hansen, a Juilliard graduate, joins the staff of the Crawthorne State Mental Hospital and immediately clashes with the director, Dr. Matthew Clark, about his strict training methods. Civilian scientist Jason Eldridge (Hutton) runs Magnetic Analyzer Computing Synchrotron (MACS), a vacuum-tube computer aboard the USS Elmira. He and his friend Lt. Ferguson Howard (McQueen) realize that, by using MACS to record a roulette table's spins over time, the computer can predict future results.
