Subhash Nagre (Amitabh Bachchan), who is known by his followers as Sarkar, lives in Mumbai. The opening scenes show a rape victim's father (Veerendra Saxena) approaching Sarkar for justice (which the corrupt law and order system has failed to deliver) which Sarkar promptly establishes by having the rapist beaten up by his henchmen. His son, Vishnu (Kay Kay Menon), plays a sleazy producer who is more interested in the film actress Sapna (Nisha Kothari) than his wife Amrita (Rukhsar). Sarkar's other, more upright son, Shankar (Abhishek Bachchan), returns from the United States with his love Pooja (Katrina Kaif) after completing his education there. Pooja's doubts about Sarkar's image cause Shankar, who firmly believes in his father's righteousness, to break up with her later in the movie.

French secret agent Josselin Beaumont is sent to kill Colonel Njala, the dictator of Malagawi, a fictional African country. The murder of a prostitute in German-occupied Warsaw in 1942 causes Abwehr Major Grau (Omar Sharif) to start an investigation, as she was also a German agent. Fabio, un étudiant en architecture, militant de Lotta Continua, formation de l'extrême-gauche italienne, participe à une manifestation. Celle-ci dégènère en affrontement sanglant entre forces de l'ordre et jeunes contestataires. Au cours de cet événement, un étudiant est tué d'une balle de calibre 7,65. Fabio est lui-même violemment malmené. Il s'empare alors d'un poing américain, trouvé au sol, et blesse mortellement un agent de police. Alors qu'un de ses compagnons, Massimo Trotti, est inculpé pour ce meurtre, Fabio veut se constituer prisonnier mais son responsable politique l'en dissuade. Le juge Aldo Sola, le propre père de Fabio, est chargé d'enquêter sur les deux assassinats. Les premiers interrogatoires ne donnent pas de résultats fiables : les culpabilités respectives n'ont guère été formellement établies. Afin de prouver l'innocence de Massimo, Fabio subtilise dans le bureau de son père les procès-verbaux d'instruction et transmet les copies au journal La Cause du Peuple, organe de Lotta Continua, qui publie en titre : « La magistrature accumule de fausses preuves contre Trotti ». Désormais, la confrontation entre un père et son fils s'avère inévitable.

Mexico, années 1920. Le caudillo militaire à la tête du pays annonce la fin de son règne. Son candidat favori pour lui succéder est l'actuel Chef du gouvernement. Mais, à l'intérieur de son propre parti et à la Chambre des députés, d'autres hommes politiques soutiennent le ministre de la Guerre, le général Ignacio Aguirre. Ce dernier, afin de ne pas entrer en conflit avec le caudillo, donne sa démission. Malgré les pressions de ses partisans, il hésite à postuler sa candidature. Après l'attentat commis contre l'un de ses amis député et une violente altercation avec le général Jiménez, Chef du gouvernement, il modifie sa position. Ce qui lui vaut bientôt d'être arrêté par les fidèles du caudillo. Le général Elizondo, un de ses soutiens, organise son évasion. Toutefois, Aguirre finira par être trahi et sera assassiné sur la route de Toluca.
