This film was made by Toho (Japan) in collaboration with the Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong). It is a film adaptation of the traditional Chinese legend The legend of the White Snake.

Japon, hiver 1935. Le peintre Shimamura se rend dans un onsen, une station thermale de montagne pour retrouver Komako, rencontrée durant l'été précédent. Lui est marié et habite à Tokyo, tandis qu’elle est devenue geisha dans l'onsen. Elle doit une travailler pour subvenir aux besoins de sa mère et de sa famille adoptive. En effet, sa mère adoptive, ancienne geisha et professeur de musique, ne peut plus exercer depuis qu'elle a subi une attaque qui l'a laissée handicapée et il faut payer les frais d'hospitalisation de Yukio, son fils tombé gravement malade à Tokyo. Atteint de tuberculose, Yukio est revenu auprès des siens pour y passer ses derniers jours, soigné par Yoko, l'autre fille adoptive de la professeur de musique.

In an icy North American region, an unknown aircraft is shot down by an American fighter jet. The aircraft crashes and its cargo, a low-level atomic bomb, explodes. The resulting cataclysm awakens a giant, prehistoric monster called "Gamera", who has the appearance of a giant turtle with large tusks. Japanese scientists on an expedition (including Dr. Hidaka, Kyoko, and Aoyagi) nearby are given a "devil stone" by an Eskimo chieftain, who explains that the creature is called Gamera.

A series of volcanoes erupt in Japan. The eruption at Mt. Futago (in Shizuoka Prefecture) attracts Gamera, whose arrival is witnessed by a young boy named Eiichi. Gamera then climbs up and into the volcano. A research team is dispatched to the volcano to find Gamera and study the effects of the eruption. A scientist named Dr. Sanjay Mehra (director Rakesh Roshan) creates a computer program from which he sends variations of the syllable om into space, hoping to attract the attention of extraterrestrial life. When he believes he has finally gotten a response, the scientific community mocks him. While driving home, an alien spacecraft appears overhead. Dr. Mehra veers off the road, causing the car to hit a stone, flip over, and explode. Dr. Mehra dies, but his wife survives the wreck and returns home to India. When their son Rohit (Hrithik Roshan) is born, he is mentally disabled. His mother raises him in the town of Kasauli, where he grows up to be a man of limited intellect and childish personality, but with a loving and emotional heart. Rohit has a number of much younger friends: loyal children who play with him.

The King (Jean Marais) promises his dying Queen that after her death he will only marry a woman as beautiful and virtuous as she. Pressed by his advisers to remarry and produce an heir, he comes to the conclusion that the only way to fulfil his promise is to marry his own daughter, the Princess (Catherine Deneuve). Following the advice of her godmother, the Lilac Fairy (Delphine Seyrig), the Princess demands a series of seemingly impossible nuptial gifts, in the hope that her father will be forced to give up his plans of marriage. However, the King succeeds in providing her with dresses the colour of the weather, of the moon and of the sun, and finally with the skin of a magic donkey that excretes jewels, the source of his kingdom's wealth. Donning the donkey skin, the Princess flees her father's kingdom to avoid the incestuous marriage.
