In the 1920s, Sean Thornton (John Wayne), an Irish-born American from Pittsburgh, travels to Ireland to reclaim his family's farm and his birthplace in Inisfree. He meets and falls in love with the fiery Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), the sister of the bullying, loud-mouthed landowner Squire "Red" Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen). Danaher, who had wanted the farm himself, is angry that the Widow Tillane (herself angered by Danaher's admission that he had discussed her in the local pub) accepts Sean's bid, and retaliates by refusing consent for his sister to marry. Several town locals, including the Catholic priest, Father Lonergan (Ward Bond), conspire to trick him into believing that the wealthy Widow Tillane (Mildred Natwick) wants to marry him, but only if Mary Kate is no longer living in his house. After learning the truth on Sean and Mary Kate's wedding day, an enraged Will refuses to give his sister her dowry which is made up of a large sum of money and her family possessions passed down from her mother.

Dans un stade couvert où se déroule un combat de boxe, le « castagneur » (« Battling McGook », selon le commentateur du match dans la version originale) est le champion incontesté. Son adversaire (nommé originellement « Dyspectic McBlaster ») se fait mettre KO rapidement. Le castagneur le relève pour le cogner à nouveau, d'abord sur le haut de la tête, puis il s'en sert comme d'un punching-ball. On entend les protestations de Bugs Bunny, qui crie depuis son terrier situé très loin, accusant le champion de ne se battre que contre des minus. Mais le boxeur se retrouve juste derrière lui. Il défie le lapin apeuré, qui n'a pas le temps de refuser : en un seul lancé, le boxeur le propulse jusque sur un coin du ring en le faisant traverser la porte d'entrée ouverte du stade. Le champion fait alors face au lapin et l'impressionne en contractant ses muscles : ceux-ci se gonflent l'un après l'autre, jusqu'aux biceps qui « poussent » l'un sur l'autre. Bugs, lui, arrive difficilement à faire apparaître une petite bosse sur chacun de ses bras. Bugs fait une démonstration de ses talents de boxeur, mais le « castagneur » l'envoie bouler sur un poteau d'un seul coup direct. Bugs recommence deux fois la manœuvre, mais il se retrouve battu de la même façon. Il change de stratégie : il se laisse tomber et fait le mort devant le champion... qui se penche sur lui et prend les deux poings de Bugs dans la figure. Le round suivant, Bugs se « repose » dans le coin du ring en lisant confortablement dans un fauteuil avec tous les accessoires, alors que son adversaire maçonne un gant de boxe en briques autour de son poignet. Bugs reçoit le coup d'une brutalité si extrême qu'il lui compresse la face. Le commentateur commence à compter les secondes du KO final pour le lapin, qui se prélasse couché sur le sol. Le lapin prend soudain la relève du commentateur au micro et fait croire que c'est le champion qui est accablé de coups. Ce dernier, d'ailleurs, le croit en se battant contre un lapin imaginaire, mais il finit par comprendre son erreur. Il revient furieux vers le lapin, qui fait de même. Bugs s'empare du champion et le fait tournoyer au-dessus de lui, mais trop lourd, il se fait aplatir. Bugs « se décolle » à la manière d'un autocollant, puis, façon catch, il s'attaque à une jambe du boxeur à terre. Il n'arrive cependant même pas à la bouger alors que le boxeur joue distraitement aux cartes. Bugs fait croire néanmoins qu'il a réussi à lui casser la jambe en brisant un bout de bois. Le champion, convaincu d'être blessé, saute en hurlant tout en se tenant le pied et appelle un docteur. Bugs revient déguisé. Sous prétexte de soigner sa jambe, il le couvre entièrement de bandes comme une momie. Le faux docteur envoie ensuite son poing tournoyant dans la figure, qui fait valser son adversaire aux 4 coins du ring comme une boule de flipper, qui allume un panneau « tilt ».

Adonis Johnson Creed grew up without knowing his father Apollo, the one-time world heavyweight champion, and struggles to channel the strength, skill and toughness he inherited from him. After a fight in prison, he receives a visit from Rocky Balboa. Rocky had been given a world title shot by Apollo when he was just a club fighter in Philadelphia (Rocky), had eventually won Apollo's title in a rematch (Rocky II), had befriended him and been coached by him, rediscovering what Apollo called his "eye of the tiger" (Rocky III) and had been in Apollo's corner when Apollo had died in the ring against Ivan Drago (Rocky IV). Rocky shows Adonis who Apollo was and shows he believes Adonis can be a great like his father. Adonis tracks down Rocky at Adrian's Restaurant - the Italian restaurant in Philadelphia that Rocky owns and operates, named after his late wife - and asks Rocky to train him, and although Rocky is reluctant to re-enter the sport of boxing, having already suffered from trauma to the brain (Rocky V) and made a one-off comeback at a very advanced age (Rocky Balboa) before re-entering retirement, Rocky agrees.

In 1890s San Francisco, boxing is illegal. James J. Corbett (Errol Flynn), a brash young bank teller, attends a match with his friend Walter Lowrie (Jack Carson). The judge is looking to improve the image of boxing by recruiting men from more respectable backgrounds and having them fight under the Marquess of Queensberry rules. He has even imported British coach Harry Watson (Rhys Williams) to evaluate prospects. Watson finds that Corbett, raised in a combative Irish immigrant family headed by Pat Corbett (Alan Hale), has excellent fighting skills; Geary likes his protégé's seemingly-polished manner.

Boxer and amateur pilot Joe Pendleton (Robert Montgomery), affectionately known as "the Flying Pug", flies his small aircraft to his next fight in New York City, but crashes when a control cable severs. His soul is "rescued" by 7013 (Edward Everett Horton), an officious angel who assumed that Joe could not have survived. Joe's manager, Max "Pop" Corkle (James Gleason), has his body cremated. In the afterlife, the records show his death was a mistake; he was supposed to live for 50 more years. The angel's superior, Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains), confirms this, but since there is no more body, Joe will have to take over a newly dead corpse. Mr. Jordan explains that a body is just something that is worn, like an overcoat; inside, Joe will still be himself. Joe insists that it be someone in good physical shape, because he wants to continue his boxing career. Joe keeps saying the body they find "has to be in the pink".
