The film opens on November 28, 1981 on Catalina Island, California, where 43-year-old Natalie Wood (Justine Waddell) falls off her boat called 'Splendour' and drowns. Years earlier, in 1943, in Santa Rosa, California, 5-year-old Natasha (Grace Fulton) grows up in a violent household with an overbearing mother, Maria Gurdin (Alice Krige), who goes to extremes to make her daughter a star. When one day a film is shot in town, Maria arranges a role for Natasha, and kills a butterfly in order to get her to cry in front of the camera, which is required. Her crying impresses the director, Irving Pichel (John Noble), and a year later she reluctantly moves to Hollywood to focus on her career, with her mother standing by her at every step, and with a new name: Natalie Wood. By 1946, Natalie is working on three films at a time, and is not allowed to enjoy any spare time with her friends. Three years later, now a teenager (Elizabeth Rice), she can do nothing as her older sister Olga (Leanne Simic) leaves the home because she feels neglected by her mother. Around this time, she is working on the set of The Green Promise one day, when an accident causes her to break her wrist. Fearing that her daughter will not get any roles if she has it treated, Maria dismisses any medical help, and Natalie's wrist does not heal properly as a result.

François est journaliste. Son rédacteur en chef lui confie un reportage sur les ouvriers. Kansas (Hopper) is a stunt coordinator in charge of horses on a western being shot in a small Peruvian village. Following a tragic incident on the set where an actor is killed in a stunt, Kansas decides to quit the movie business and stay in Peru with a local woman. Kansas thinks he has found paradise, but is soon called in to help in a bizarre incident: the Peruvian natives are "filming" their own movie with "cameras" made of sticks, and acting out real western movie violence, as they don't understand movie fakery. The film touches on the ideas of fiction versus reality, especially in regards to cinema. The movie is presented in a way that challenges the viewer's traditional cinematic understanding of storytelling, by presenting the story in a non-chronological fashion, and by including several devices typically only seen behind the scenes of filmmaking (rough edits and "scene missing" cards), and the use of jarring jump cuts.

Jenny (played by Susan Strasberg) is a deaf runaway who arrives in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district, searching for her brother Steve. She encounters the aptly named Stoney (Jack Nicholson) and his hippie band "Mumblin' Jim" in a coffee shop. The boys are sympathetic, especially when they discover that she is deaf and can only understand others through lip reading. They hide her from the police and help her look for her brother. He has left his apartment with no forwarding address; she has only a postcard from him which reads "Jess Saes: God is alive and well and living in a sugar cube". Meanwhile, the boys are trying hard to improve their music and get more visibility, and are approached by a promoter who says he can arrange for them to perform at "the Ballroom", clearly the Avalon Ballroom or the Fillmore West.
