Howard Winchester Hawks (May 30, 1896 – December 26, 1977) was an American film director, producer and screenwriter of the classic Hollywood era. He is popular for his films from a wide range of genres such as Scarface (1932), Bringing Up Baby (1938), Only Angels Have Wings (1939),
His Girl Friday (1940), Sergeant York (1941), To Have and Have Not (1944), The Big Sleep (1946), Red River (1948), The Thing from Another World (1951), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), and Rio Bravo (1959).

In 1942, Hawks was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for Sergeant York, and in 1975 he was awarded an Honorary Academy Award as "a master American filmmaker whose creative efforts hold a distinguished place in world cinema."

Biography

Howard Winchester Hawks naît, le 30 mai 1896, à Goshen dans l'Indiana. Il est l’aîné des cinq enfants de Frank W. Hawks, industriel de l'Indiana et de Helen Brown Hawks, née Howard issue d'une riche famille d'industriels du papier dans le Wisconsin à Neenah. En 1910 sa famille s'installe définitivement à Pasadena en Californie où l'air, plus chaud, plus sec, convient mieux à sa mère qui souffre de l'asthme. Il fait des études à Pasadena jusqu'en 1912 puis rentre à l'Université Cornell (dans l'Etat de New York) où il obtient un diplôme d'ingénieur qui lui sera remis en 1918 alors qu'il sert sous les drapeaux. En 1916, il pilote une voiture de course mais un accident le détourne de cette activité alors en 1917, il commence à travailler comme accessoiriste dans la Famous Players-Lasky pour des films dont certains joués par Mary Pickford avant de rejoindre, pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, l'armée où on l'utilise comme instructeur dans l'aviation militaire. Aussi ses films mettant en scène des aviateurs et des pilotes de course ont un cachet d'authenticité.

Après la guerre, il exerce divers petits métiers, monteur, assistant, et s'installe à Hollywood où il est colocataire d'une maison où logent Allan Dwan et Irving Thalberg qui le recommande à Jesse Lasky en 1923. Ce dernier recherchait quelqu'un pour diriger l'écriture des scénarios: Hawks signe le contrat qui le rend directeur littéraire pendant deux ans de la Famous Players-Lasky qui s'appellera ensuite Paramount. Il écrit son premier scénario, Tiger Love en 1924 mais en 1926 rejoint la Twentieth Century Fox où il dirige son premier film The Road to Glory. Après huit films muets, il passe au parlant avec le film La Patrouille de l'aube en 1930.

Parmi ses films, nombreux sont ceux qui ont fait date dans l'histoire du cinéma, comme L'Impossible Monsieur Bébé avec Cary Grant, Le Grand Sommeil avec Humphrey Bogart et Lauren Bacall, Les hommes préfèrent les blondes avec Marilyn Monroe, ou Rio Bravo avec John Wayne.

Il meurt le 26 décembre 1977 à Palm Springs en Californie, des séquelles d'une chute, le lendemain du décès de Charles Chaplin.

Ses cendres furent dispersées dans le désert autour de Calimesa (Californie).

Le 8 février 1960, il obtient son étoile sur le Walk of Fame au 1708 Vine Street.

In 1920s Chicago, Italian immigrant Antonio "Tony" Camonte (Paul Muni) acts on the orders of Italian mafioso John "Johnny" Lovo (Osgood Perkins) and kills "Big" Louis Costillo (Harry J. Vejar), the leading crime boss of the city's South Side. Johnny then takes control of the South Side with Tony as his key lieutenant, selling large amounts of illegal beer to speakeasies and muscling in on bars run by rival outfits. The film opens during the American Civil War. Col. Cord McNally (John Wayne) has instructions telegraphed to his close friend, Lt. Ned Forsythe (Peter Jason), in charge of the Union troops on a Union army payroll train. However, Confederates led by Capt. Pierre Cordona (Jorge Rivero) and Sgt. Tuscarora Phillips (Christopher Mitchum) hijack the train. They have an elegant plan of listening in on the telegraph wires, greasing the tracks to stop the train, disconnecting the payroll wagon from the engine so it would roll back down the hill, using a hornet's nest to force the Union guards to jump off the train, then catching the train with many ropes tied to trees. In the process, Lt. Forsythe is fatally injured.
