Le soir de son mariage avec Hilda Bergmann, fille d'un chimiste suédois:le professeur Bergmann, le jeune et riche américain Willy Keanton est poignardé par un inconnu masqué. Celui-ci enlève Hilda qui est retrouvée un peu plus tard, par le comte Robert d'Arbel. L'inspecteur Jacques Miral, surnommé « le furet de la tourpointue » est chargé de l'enquête. Il découvre bientôt qu'un bandit international, Méphisto, cherche à s'approprier une formule de procédé contre les gaz asphyxiants, inventée par le professeur Bergmann. La lutte est dure entre Miral et l'insaisissable Méphisto. Monique Aubray, secrétaire de Keanton et fiancée de l'inspecteur, les forains Nostradamus et le « dogue de Bordeaux », le romancier populaire Fortuné Bidon, s'y trouvent mêlés.

Framing Story Five strangers board a descending lift, one by one, in a modern office block in London. They reach the sub-basement, though none of them have pressed for that destination. There they find a large, elaborately furnished room which appears to be a gentlemen's club. The lift door has closed and there are no buttons to bring it back, nor any other exit. Resigned to waiting for help, they settle down with drinks and talk. The conversation turns to dreams, and each man tells of a recurring nightmare.

In one segment of the anthology, legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock presents his concepts of how to create suspense in a clip from Alfred Hitchcock: Men Who Made The Movies.
