Un village montagnard en Norvège au XVII siècle. An-Magritt est née d'un viol. Attachée au pilori, sa mère se suicide en se jetant dans la rivière. Il revient au grand-père de prendre soin de l'enfant. Conçue dans la violence, c'est grâce à la charité qu'An-Magritt doit son salut. Elle n'a pourtant d'autre alternative que de travailler durement tout en subissant le froid et la faim au risque de sa vie. Dès son adolescence, la jeune femme acquiert une personnalité bien trempée, s'acquittant de tâches ordinairement dévolues aux hommes - convoyer du minerai et du charbon entre la mine et la fonderie, labourer pour assurer sa subsistance - et apprenant à lire. Sa beauté et son farouche caractère attirent l'attention d'un ingénieur allemand dont elle finit par s'éprendre. Alors que les conditions de vie et de travail sont déjà extrêmement pénibles pour les villageois, le chambellan Jochum, prétextant de graves difficultés, annonce de terribles restrictions.

Trois destins de femmes cubaines aux prénoms identiques, à trois périodes historiques distinctes, ou l'évolution de la condition féminine dans la plus grande île des Antilles. La première Lucía, issue d'une famille de la bourgeoisie coloniale, s'éprend d'un bel Espagnol, déjà marié dans son pays. En découvrant cette réalité, celle-ci en perd la raison. Nous sommes au moment de la guerre d'indépendance contre l'Espagne (1895). La deuxième Lucía (cette fois de classe moyenne) s'engage aux côtés d'un révolutionnaire dans le combat contre la dictature de Gerardo Machado (1932). Dernière partie du triptyque : durant les premières années de la Révolution cubaine, Lucía est cette fois-ci une ouvrière agricole souffrant du machisme de son conjoint dans une société socialiste défendant officiellement l'égalité des sexes.

Set in an unspecified northern kingdom, the film opens with the young Horus (aka Hols) (Hisako Ōkata (Japanese)/Billie Lou Watt (English)) attempting to fight off a pack of "silver wolves," and accidentally waking up an ancient stone giant, named Mogue (or Rockoar in some editions of the film). Horus succeeds in pulling a splinter from the giant's shoulder, which transpires to be a rusty and ancient sword. The giant proclaims this to be the "Sword of the Sun," promising also that when the sword has been reforged, he will come to Horus, who will then be called "Prince of the Sun".

Hans Christian Andersen's story is simplified in this animated feature, which begins with an animated copy of his fairy tales, introduced by a little man, who says he is "old Dreamy" ("Ole Lukøje"). Old Dreamy tells the viewer that on days when the master storyteller Andersen is not overtired, he puts him to sleep with his colorful, magic umbrella ("slumbrella") that also causes him to dream wonderful stories, which he then writes as his fairy tales. Old Dreamy then narrates the story of the Snow Queen, which he begins with Kay and Gerda up in their window box garden, planting two roses together, which Kay calls "our roses",
