Ernesto Colli (16 May 1940 – 19 November 1982) was an Italian film, television and stage actor.

Born in Biella, Colli graduated from liceo classico, then he started acting in some amateur dramatics and starred in two lost Super 8 films. After one year of university he decided to abandon his studies to enroll the Fersen drama school in Rome. A real life friend of Vittorio Gassman, Colli often acted alongside him, especially on stage, and he made his film debut playing a small role in the Gassman's film The Devil in Love. He then appeared in a large number of movies and TV-series, even if usually in character roles.

Primo Baffo (Renato Pozzetto) est une sorte de chanteur de cabaret qui amuse les soldats avec ses chansons et ses sketches pendant la guerre. Il fait tout pour éviter d’être enrôlé et partir à la guerre. Mais à la fin de son spectacle, il est amené de force devant le colonel pour la conscription. Il essaie de se faire passer pour un homosexuel mais sans résultat. Arrivé au front, il croise une jeune fille misérable nommée Marianna (Laura Antonelli) lors d’une patrouille dans un village. Il cherche à la séduire et lorsqu’il se trouve déshabillé, elle lui vole tous ses vêtements et effets personnels et s’enfuit avec son complice. Les trois se retrouvent à nouveau quelques jours plus tard et Primo veut se venger. Mais la guerre les rattrape. Après quelques épisodes tragi-comiques au front face aux allemands, Primo et son copain Torno (Aldo Maccione) se cachent dans le grenier d’une masure bientôt occupée par les Uhlans, en terrain conquis. Ils assistent alors, impuissants dans leur cachette, aux derniers outrages que les soldats font subir à Marianna. Mais celle-ci finira par se venger.

The film starts with the murder of District Attorney Vargas in Palermo, amongst a climate of demonstrations, strikes and political tension between the Left and the government. The subsequent investigation failing, the police assign the protagonist Inspector Rogas (Lino Ventura) to solve the case. While he is starting his investigation, two judges are killed. All victims turn out to have worked together on several cases. After Rogas discovers evidence of corruption surrounding the three government officials, he is encouraged by superiors "not to forage after gossip," but to trail the "crazy lunatic who for no reason whatever is going about murdering judges." This near admission of guilt drives Rogas to seek out three men wrongfully convicted by the murdered judges. He is joined by a journalist friend working for a far-left newspaper, Cusan.
