En 1946, Marco prend du bon temps et navigue sur le Lac Majeur. Lors d'une escale il se fait aborder par Maître Orimbelli qui semble s'ennuyer. Ce dernier l'invite à dîner chez lui et lui présente sa femme irascible et sa belle-sœur Matilde, dont le mari est mort à la guerre. Orimbelli insiste pour que Marco reste dormir dans la plus belle chambre de la villa : la chambre de l'évêque. Le lendemain, Marco, qui doit aller rejoindre Charlotte, une amie, trouve Orimbelli qui l'attend sur son bateau. Celui-ci, jouant l'apitoiement, lui force la main pour profiter du voyage. Marco cède. Il ne tardera pas à découvrir qu'Orimbelli est prêt à tout pour arriver à ses fins avec les femmes qui passent à sa portée.

Marino and Marisa are two villagers of a small mountain village in the Marche region, where the mentality of the people is still very backward. The two love each other very much and want to marry, but because of one day Marisa Marino is forced to leave for Rome. In 1929 in Abruzzo, in the mountain villages of Pescina and Fontamara, near Avezzano, the people are subjugated by the arrival of a team of fascists. The militiamen prove hostile, preventing citizens from obtaining supplies necessary to survive the imminent winter. The small Berardo is shocked by the rape of his mother by a fascist officer, and is forced to go to Rome, meditating revenge. Ten years later Berardo in fact, now that he has become large, goes back from Rome in Abruzzo, and discovers that the country is still victim of abuse of fascism. The young communist tries to attack squadrons, but is murdered.

In Rome the rich and stingy landowner Argante believed to be sick in any possible harm, although born as a fish. Another thing that the cruel man holds great attention is his money and his contract with a young doctor for the wedding of his daughter Lucrezia. In fact, the good catch is considered the girl a total moron who knows nothing about medicine, but Don Argante not pay much attention and just think to combine the deal as soon as possible. Meanwhile his wife, without his or her knowledge, betrays him with another. Comes the doctor betrothed his daughter to the house of Argante, as he finds himself in yet another false relapse, and thus begins to visit him. Argante now realizes the nonsense that says the young but is only about money and does not care. Later, between the master and his servant turns a strong argument that Argante is not loved by anyone in the family except by his servants. To test the family Argante is persuaded by the servants to pretend to be dead in order to discover the hatred that his wife and family have of him and so it happens. As if that were not enough rich to the poor has been stolen also deposit money.

While in Florence on business, Roman landscape architect Giulio Marengo meets an alluring college student, Francesca, and spends the night with her. Like many southern Europeans of the period (1960s to early 1970s), Nino Garofalo (Nino Manfredi) is a migrant "guest worker" from Ciociaria, working as a waiter in Switzerland. He loses his work permit when he is caught urinating in public, so he begins to lead a clandestine life in Switzerland. At first he is supported by Elena, a Greek woman. Then he befriends an Italian industrialist, relocated to Switzerland because of financial problems. The industrialist takes him under his wing, only to commit suicide when he squanders his last savings. Nino is constrained to find shelter with a group of clandestine Neapolitans living in a chicken coop, together with the same chickens they tend to in order to survive. Captivated by the idyllic vision of a group of young blonde, Swiss youths, he decides to dye his hair and pass himself off as a local. In a bar, when rooting for the Italian national football team during its transmission, he is found out after celebrating a goal scored by Fabio Capello. He is arrested and deported. He embarks on a train and finds himself in a cabin filled with returning Italian guest workers. Amid the songs of "sun" and "sea", he is seen having second thoughts. He gets off at the first stop: better life as an illegal immigrant than a life of misery.

Adriana De Mauro (Sophia Loren) loves Cesar Braggi (Richard Burton), but Cesar, honoring his father's dying wish, allows his brother, Antonio (Ian Bannen), to marry Adriana. As fate wills, Antonio dies in an automobile accident. Adriana's mourning for Antonio ends when Cesar steps in to rekindle her lust of life. Soon, Adriana begins having dizzy spells. Cesar helps her to a specialist, and the diagnosis is not good. She has an incurable disease. For the rest of their time together, Cesar woos Adriana and eventually proposes to her on a gondola. Yet, Signora De Mauro (Barbara Pilavin), Adriana's mother, is not pleased with the relationship and argues bitterly with Cesar and stands in the way.
