L'an 2563, 300 ans après que la Terre a connu une catastrophe appelée "l'effondrement" consécutive à une guerre contre Mars. Dans la ville d'Iron City infestée par le crime, le Dr Dyson Ido, médecin spécialisé dans les augmentations biomécaniques, cherche des pièces détachées dans une décharge à ciel ouvert venant de Zalem, dernière cité céleste de la planète, surplombant Iron City, et où chacun rêve d'aller. Ido trouve le corps d'une cyborg en piteux état. Il va alors la ramener dans sa clinique pour la réparer. La jeune cyborg se réveille, réparée mais amnésique. Le docteur Ido la rebaptise Alita (du prénom de sa fille décédée) et lui fait découvrir le monde dans lequel ils survivent. Mais Alita se découvre des réflexes combatifs et une force surhumaine, veut toujours en savoir plus et aller plus loin. Elle fait la connaissance d'Hugo, un jeune revendeur de pièces détachées auquel elle se lie rapidement. Alita va tenter de comprendre qui elle est réellement et d'où elle vient. Elle croise la route du terrible Vector, qui contrôle les matches du sport ultra-populaire de la ville, le Motorball.

In a Louisiana nursing home in 1999, Paul Edgecomb becomes nervous while watching the 1935 film Top Hat. He is with his elderly friend Elaine, who becomes concerned, and Paul tells her that the film reminded him of his past, when he was a prison officer in charge of death row inmates at the Cold Mountain Penitentiary during the summer of 1935. The scene shifts to 1935, where Paul works with fellow guards Brutus "Brutal" Howell, Harry Terwilliger, and Dean Stanton. Unlike the other guards, Paul is a very calm guard and is sympathetic with some inmates.

The film is set in 1880 in Big Whiskey, Wyoming, where Little Bill Daggett, the local sheriff and former gunfighter, does not allow guns or criminals in his town. Two cowboys, Quick Mike and "Davey-Boy" Bunting, disfigure prostitute Delilah Fitzgerald after she laughs at the small size of Quick Mike's penis. Instead of punishing the cowboys, Little Bill allows them to pay compensation to the brothel owner, Skinny Dubois. The rest of the prostitutes, led by Strawberry Alice, are infuriated by this leniency and offer a $1,000 reward to whoever can kill the cowboys.

Thirty years after a nuclear apocalypse, Eli (Denzel Washington) travels on foot toward the west coast of the former United States. In 1963 Texas, convicts Robert "Butch" Haynes (Kevin Costner) and Jerry Pugh (Keith Szarabajka) escape from the state penitentiary in Huntsville. The film opens in the countryside outside the fictional town of Lahood, California, and takes place sometime in the 1870s or early 1880s (based on remarks in the film about outlawing hydraulic mining). Thugs working for big-time miner Coy LaHood ride in and destroy the camp of a group of struggling miners and their families who have settled in nearby Carbon Canyon and are panning for gold there. In leaving, they also shoot the little dog of fourteen-year-old Megan Wheeler. As Megan buries it in the woods and prays for a miracle, we see a stranger heading to the town on horseback.

Young, starstruck Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) seeks out Jesse James (Brad Pitt) when the James gang is planning a train robbery in Blue Cut, Missouri, making unsuccessful attempts to join the gang with the help of his older brother Charley (Sam Rockwell), already a member. The train turns out to be carrying only a fraction of the money originally thought, and Frank James (Sam Shepard) tells Charley Ford that this robbery would be the last the James brothers would commit, and that the gang "gave up their nightridin' for good." Jesse returns home to Kansas City, bringing the Fords, Dick Liddil (Paul Schneider) and his cousin, Wood Hite (Jeremy Renner). Jesse sends Charley, Wood and Dick away, but insists that Bob stay. He wanted the younger man just for his help in moving furniture to a new home in St. Joseph. Bob becomes more admiring of James before being sent back to his sister's farmhouse, where he rejoins his brother Charley, Hite, and Liddil.

Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the film begins in a diner called Bennys Billiards, where local tough guy Rusty James is told by Midget that rival group leader Biff Wilcox wants to meet him that night in an abandoned garage lot for a fight. Accepting the challenge, Rusty James then talks with his friends — the wily Smokey, loyal B.J., and nerdy Steve - who all have a different take on the forthcoming fight. Steve mentions that Rusty James' older brother, "The Motorcycle Boy," would not be pleased with the fight as he had previously created a truce forbidding gang fights, or "rumbles." Rusty James dismisses him, saying that Motorcycle Boy (whose real name is never revealed) has been gone for two months, leaving without explanation or promise of return.
