A voice over says, "No, that's not right." The scenario is repeated with adjustments until the voice is eventually satisfied. The screen fades to Cathy Palmer (JoBeth Williams) sitting at a typewriter, finishing up the story. She seals it in an envelope and sends it off. Later, her husband, Kevin (James Staley), comes home and she tells him about entering a contest to write a short story following the "Rebecca Ryan" series of novels. Kevin is patronizing, telling her, "The important thing, kid, is that you're doing something you like to do".

Héléna Bourdelle, called "The Bourdelle," is a great singer and wife of maestro André Bourdelle. Joining the Resistance, he is killed by the accidental explosion of a grenade. Following the defeat, the family's mansion is taken over by German forces, leaving the family occupying a few back rooms, complaining to the Kommandantur about his excesses and those of his men. Bourdelle, her daughters and their tenant help by chance an English soldier to escape and are then forced to hide him. The family, whose former caretaker Ramirez has become a Gestapo agent, is favoured by the General Spontz who has a soft spot for Bernadette Bourdelle. He is willing to ignore the fact that Guy-Hubert, son of the family, a seemingly cowardly and effeminate hairdresser, is actually the elusive vigilante known as "Super-Resistant".

It is the story of an illicit romance, set in the Swiss Alps. Connery plays Douglas, a middle-aged Scottish doctor on vacation in the Alps in 1932 with a young woman, Kate (Betsy Brantley), whom he introduces as his wife. Douglas has brought Kate to the Alps for a mountain climbing trip. Douglas and Kate are absorbed with a psychological melancholy. Through flashbacks, it is revealed that Kate has been in love with Douglas since she was a little girl and that she seduced him away from another woman. The flashbacks also reveal that Kate is not his wife, but his niece. But then, in their mountain retreat, climbing guide Johann (Lambert Wilson) appears and he develops an attraction for Kate.

In 1916, during the thick of World War I, a German and a French fighter ace by the names of Gunther von Beckman (Hoffman) and Jo Cavalier (Belmondo) manage to drag each other out of the sky. When Napoleon (James Tolkan) invades Austria during the Napoleonic Wars, Boris Grushenko (Woody Allen), a coward and pacifist scholar, is forced to enlist in the Russian Army. Desperate and disappointed after hearing the news that Sonja (Diane Keaton), his cousin twice removed, is to wed a herring merchant, he inadvertently becomes a war hero. He returns and marries the recently widowed Sonja, who does not want to marry Boris, but promises him that she will when she thinks that he is about to be killed in a duel. Their marriage is filled with philosophical debates, and no money. Their life together is interrupted when Napoleon invades the Russian Empire. Boris wants to flee but his wife, angered that the invasion will interfere with their plans to start a family that year, conceives a plot to assassinate Napoleon at his headquarters in Moscow. Boris and Sonja debate the matter with some degree of philosophical double-talk, and Boris reluctantly goes along with it. They fail to kill Napoleon and Sonja escapes arrest while Boris is executed, despite being told by a vision that he will be pardoned.

In this teen romance, a neglected young English boy named Paul Harrison (Sean Bury) runs away and becomes a friend of a French girl named Michelle Latour (Anicée Alvina) on the same flight. Together, they go to an idyllic marsh location in France; specifically, the Camargue. There, they become lovers, set up housekeeping, have a baby, and play at being responsible adults. Flash-back sur le parvis de l’église : Catherine (Brigitte Bardot) raconte ce qui s’est passé auparavant, avant que Judith (Micheline Presle) ne se jette dans les bras de Michel (Louis Jourdan), en lui disant qu’elle est divorcée et que Catherine ne s’évanouisse. Catherine, jeune provinciale, est repérée par Michel, amant de Judith, directrice d’un journal de mode. Elle devient mannequin sous le nom de « Chouchou » et elle forme un couple pour le magazine avec Patrice (Jean-François Calvé), un ex-acteur. Judith décide de marier Catherine et Patrice, faussement, pour faire un coup médiatique. Catherine et les autres vont faire des photographies et filmer le mariage dans le village natal de Catherine. Tout le monde est hébergé chez les tantes de Catherine, qui l’ont élevée. Catherine repousse la demande en mariage de Patrice, qui part dans la nuit. Michel est contraint de prendre la place de Patrice pour faire les photos, réalisées par Toni (Marcel Amont) et Marc (Roger Dumas, en blond !). Catherine s’aperçoit qu’elle aime Michel et elle finit par le lui avouer. Il ne veut pas la croire. Elle va s’offrir à Toni et à Marc, mais il y a des contretemps à chaque fois. Judith a récupéré Patrice et vient annoncer son divorce à Michel, après la fausse cérémonie à l’église (retour au début du film). Michel finit par repousser Judith. Il se marie vraiment avec Catherine. Judith veut qui’ils soient accompagnés par Marc et Toni pendant leur voyage de noces. Michel refuse et part avec Catherine.
