Simon (Stanislas Merhar) lives in an apartment with his grandmother and his girlfriend Ariane (Sylvie Testud). He follows Ariane on a daily basis testing her to see where she is going, what she is doing and whether she is lying to him about what she does. Ariane submits to his controlling ways including letting him have sex with her while she is feigning sleep, the only way he seems capable of having intercourse. However Simon begins to grow jealous of Ariane's friends and suspects that she is having an affair with another woman. Unable to let go of his jealousy he asks her to move out of his apartment.

Une réalisatrice de trente ans, Anna Silver, est accueillie à Essen en Allemagne pour présenter son dernier film au cinéma le Roxy. Elle termine la soirée dans sa chambre d'hôtel avec l'instituteur qui anime le ciné-club qui l'a invitée. Brusquement, elle lui demande de partir. Elle accepte néanmoins de le revoir chez lui le lendemain. Après cette triste visite, elle prend le chemin du retour. Elle profite d'un changement de train à Cologne pour retrouver une amie de sa mère qui est aussi la mère de son ex-petit ami. Elle converse avec un voyageur pendant le trajet vers Bruxelles. Le train fait une halte en gare de Louvain. La réalisatrice a rendez-vous avec sa mère à la gare de Bruxelles-Midi. Elles boivent un verre à la cafétéria avant de louer une chambre dans un hôtel du quartier. Le lendemain, elle reprend le train pour Paris où son compagnon l'attend.

Jeanne Dielman examines a single mother's regimented schedule of cooking, cleaning and mothering over three days. The mother, Jeanne Dielman (whose name is only derived from the title and from a letter she reads to her son), prostitutes herself to a male client daily for her and her son's subsistence. Like her other activities, Jeanne's prostitution is part of the routine she performs every day by rote and is uneventful. But on the second day, Jeanne's routine begins to unravel subtly, as she drops a newly washed spoon and overcooks the potatoes that she's preparing for dinner. These alterations to Jeanne's existence prepare for the climax on the third day.
