Un an après la mort de Stoïck la Brute et la défaite de Drago. During a set of winter holidays, all the dragons of Berk unexpectedly depart, leaving everyone distraught. The only exception seems to be of Toothless, who cannot fly independently. Out of compassion, Hiccup creates him a new prosthesis allowing him independent flight, and thus allows his escape. Three days later, Meatlug, a Gronkle dragon whom Fishlegs had kept chained, escapes, inadvertently taking Hiccup. Meatlug travels to a sulfur-hot springs island where the other dragons have been hatching their eggs. Astrid and the gang also discover Dragon eggs in Meatlug's nest, which they scatter around Berk in hopes of lifting the villagers' spirits. This plan backfires because dragon eggs hatch with an explosion, devastating Berk.

Happening after the events in How to Train Your Dragon, the short shows Hiccup, Astrid, Fishlegs, Toothless and Gobber telling the legend behind the Book of Dragons with the misadventures of its author, Bork the Bold. In addition to Bork's discoveries, the young Vikings reveal their own training methods they developed with new, never before seen dragons. The short shows a total of 14 dragons, each spread into 7 classes: Stoker (Terrible Terror, Monstrous Nightmare), Boulder (Gronckle, Whispering Death), Fear (Hideous Zippleback, Snaptrapper), Sharp (Deadly Nadder, Timberjack), Tidal (Scauldron, Thunderdrum), Mystery (Changewing, Boneknapper) and Strike (Skrill, Night Fury). But there are new dragons that are not in the book that are shown in the cartoon series.

The island of Berk is a remote Viking village, from which dragons periodically steal livestock. Hiccup, the awkward son of the village chieftain, Stoick the Vast, is too small to fight the dragons and instead fashions mechanical devices under his apprenticeship with Gobber the blacksmith, though his inventions often backfire. During one attack, Hiccup believes he has shot down a Night Fury, an extremely rare and dangerous dragon. Hiccup later finds it in the forest trapped in his bolas, but finds that he can't bring himself to kill the dragon and instead sets it free. Stoick assembles a fleet to find the dragons' nest, leaving Hiccup in a dragon-fighting class taught by Gobber. Hiccup returns to the forest to find the Night Fury still there, and realizes it is unable to fly properly because of its crippled caudal fin. Hiccup gradually tames the dragon and gives it the name "Toothless", for its retractable teeth. Hiccup makes a harness and prosthetic fin that allows him to guide the dragon in free flight. By studying Toothless' behavior, Hiccup becomes proficient in subduing the captive dragons during training. Stoick's fleet arrives home unsuccessful, but he is cheered by Hiccup's unexpected success.

The film opens with Gobber's house on fire and the Vikings and resident dragons getting it under control. Gobber is convinced that his old nemesis The Boneknapper Dragon, a giant, yet perfectly silent dragon (the only one with no roar) that clothes itself in bones for armor, is responsible. However no one else believes that the Boneknapper even exists, much less that it burned his house, especially when the evidence suggests that the fire was started by his underwear drying at his hearth and catching fire.

While scavenging for food, RJ the raccoon enters the cave of Vincent the bear who has a large wagon full of human food taken from a nearby rest stop. In the 1880s, an English couple and their infant son escape a burning ship, ending up on land near uncharted rainforests off the coast of Africa. The couple craft themselves a treehouse from their ship's wreckage, but are subsequently killed by Sabor, a rogue leopardess. Kala, a female gorilla who recently lost her own child to Sabor, hears the cries of the orphaned human infant and finds him in the ruined treehouse. Though she is attacked by Sabor, Kala and the baby manage to escape. Kala takes the baby back to the gorilla troop to raise as her own, an act of which her mate, Kerchak, disapproves. Kala raises the human child, naming him Tarzan. Though he befriends other gorillas in the troop and other animals, including the young female gorilla Terk and the paranoid male elephant Tantor, Tarzan finds himself unable to keep up with them, so he takes great efforts to improve himself. As a young man, Tarzan is able to kill Sabor with his crude spear and protect the troop, gaining Kerchak's reluctant respect.

In a world where toys pretend to be lifeless in the presence of humans, Woody, a pullstring cowboy toy, is the leader of a group of toys that are owned by a boy named Andy Davis. "Bernie" LaPlante is a pickpocket and petty criminal who anonymously rescues survivors of an aircraft crash, in order to steal some of their purses and wallets – losing a shoe in the process. He later meets a homeless Vietnam veteran, John Bubber, tells him about the rescue at the crash site and gives him his remaining shoe. When a television station offers $1 million to the "Angel of Flight 104", Bernie cannot claim the reward, due to his arrest while fencing credit cards he stole from the people he rescued. Bubber, however, uses the single shoe to take credit for the act. Bernie tries to tell people that Bubber is a fake, but the media has sensationalized the heroic Bubber, and everyone wants to believe in him rather than Bernie.

Gomez Addams laments the 25-year absence of his brother Fester, who disappeared after the two had a falling-out. Gomez's lawyer Tully Alford owes money to loan shark Abigail Craven, and notices that her son Gordon closely resembles Fester. Tully proposes that Gordon pose as Fester to infiltrate the Addams household and find the hidden vault where they keep their vast riches. Tully and his wife Margaret attend a séance at the Addams home led by Grandmama in which the family tries to contact Fester's spirit.
