Jeffrey Warren "Jeff" Daniels (born February 19, 1955) is an American actor, musician, and playwright. He founded a nonprofit theater company, the Purple Rose Theatre Company, in his home state of Michigan. He has performed in a number of stage productions, both on and off Broadway, and has been nominated for the Tony Award as Best Actor for the Broadway play God of Carnage (2009), along with his other three castmates.
His film debut was 1981's Ragtime, and his most recent films are Steve Jobs and The Martian, in 2015. For his work, he has received four Golden Globe Award nominations, including as Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture—Comedy/Musical for Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) (hence the name of his theater company). He has also received nominations by the Screen Actors Guild, Satellite Awards, and several others for his work in The Squid and the Whale (London Critics Circle Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, and Gotham Awards). He played Debra Winger's husband in the 1983 Oscar-winning film Terms of Endearment. Recently, he starred as Will McAvoy in Aaron Sorkin's HBO television series The Newsroom, for which he won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2013.
In 1986 Daniels moved his home to Chelsea, Michigan, where the couple had grown up. They have three children: Benjamin (born 1984), Lucas (born 1987), and Nellie (born 1990).
He has appeared as the TV spokesman for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation promoting Michigan's effectiveness in bringing in new companies, featured on CNBC.
Daniels was inducted into the Michigan Walk of Fame on May 25, 2006, in Lansing, Michigan, and delivered the winter commencement address at the University of Michigan on December 20, 2009, at which he was granted an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts.

Daniels has been married to his high school sweetheart, Kathleen Rosemary Treado, since 1979. They married on Friday the 13th because he wore the number 13 on his baseball uniform.In 1986 Daniels moved his home to Chelsea, Michigan, where the couple had grown up. They have three children: Benjamin (born 1984), Lucas (born 1987), and Nellie (born 1990).

The film is divided into three acts set in the lead-up to key product launches hosted by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs (Fassbender). The first depicts Jobs and marketing executive Joanna Hoffman (Winslet) dealing with problems before the Apple Macintosh launch in 1984. The computer's voice demo will not say "hello", and Jobs demands engineer Andy Hertzfeld (Stuhlbarg) fixes it, threatening to publicly humiliate him in the presentation. Hertzfeld finally suggests faking the demo using the prototype 512k computer. Meanwhile, Jobs rants about a Time magazine article that exposed his paternity dispute with ex-girlfriend Chrisann Brennan (Waterson): Jobs denies he is the father of Brennan's five-year-old daughter, Lisa. Brennan arrives with Lisa to confront Jobs; she is bitter over his denials and his refusal to support her despite his wealth. Jobs bonds with Lisa over her MacPaint art and agrees to provide more money and a house, though he still denies his fatherhood. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak (Rogen) wishes Jobs well and asks him to acknowledge the Apple II team in his remarks, but Jobs refuses. Flashbacks show the two creating the Apple II, revealing that Wozniak's ideas made the product successful. Jobs then discusses company politics with CEO John Sculley (Daniels); they talk about Jobs' life as an adopted child, and Jobs admits that his need for control stems from his feelings of powerlessness in being given up.

In 2044, 25-year-old Joe works for a Kansas City crime syndicate as a "looper." Since technology in the future has made it almost impossible to successfully dispose of murdered bodies, the syndicates use time travel which was invented in 2074 and subsequently outlawed. Managed by a man sent from the future named Abe, loopers kill and dispose of victims sent back in time whose faces are hidden by a bag. They are paid with bars of silver strapped to the target. To prevent connections to the use of illegal time travel, when a looper is retired, his future self is sent back to 2044 as a target for his younger self, but with gold bars as a payment. This event is referred to as "closing the loop" and signals the end of a looper's contract. Failing to close the loop is punishable by execution.

Howl explores the super smash bros and works of 20th-century American poet, Allen Ginsberg. Constructed in a nonlinear fashion, the film juxtaposes historical events with a variety of cinematic techniques. It reconstructs the early life of Ginsberg during the 1940s and 1950s (as portrayed by James Franco). It also re-enacts Ginsberg's debut performance of "Howl" at the Six Gallery Reading on October 7, 1955 in black-and-white. The reading was the first important public manifestation of the Beat Generation and helped to herald the West Coast literary revolution that became known as the San Francisco Renaissance. In addition, parts of the poem are interpreted through animated sequences. Finally, these events are juxtaposed with color images of the 1957 obscenity trial of San Francisco poet and City Lights Bookstore co-founder, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who was the first person to publish "Howl" in Howl and Other Poems.
